Darlington Economic Campus Visit

Business and Economics students enjoyed a fantastic Work Experience Day at the Darlington Economic Campus as part of Opportunities Week, giving them a unique opportunity to explore careers within the Civil Service and discover how economics influences national decision-making.

The day began with an engaging panel discussion featuring current degree apprentices from HM Treasury and the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Students gained valuable insight into apprenticeship pathways, career opportunities and the exciting work being undertaken across government departments.

Students then put their knowledge and skills to the test by taking part in a policy challenge focused on reducing the number of young people who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training). Working collaboratively in teams, they analysed data, developed evidence-based proposals and presented their recommendations to experienced policy advisers before confidently responding to questions about their ideas.

The challenge provided an excellent opportunity for students to apply the economic theories they have studied in the classroom to a real-world scenario, while further developing key employability skills such as teamwork, communication, critical thinking and problem-solving.

To round off an inspiring and memorable day, students were delighted to meet the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, who was visiting the Darlington Economic Campus. She took time to speak with several students about their future ambitions, career aspirations and plans beyond Durham Sixth Form Centre.

The visit was a valuable and inspiring experience, giving students a genuine insight into the impact economics can have on society and the wide range of rewarding careers available within the Civil Service.
