Amazon Visit
Behind the Scenes at Amazon: Business Students Explore Operations Management
Our A Level Business cohort recently enjoyed a visit to Amazon’s Bowburn Fulfilment Centre (MME2), offering students a first hand look at modern operational processes. Over the past two weeks, groups visited the facility to complement their studies in the new operations management module.
Students were treated to comprehensive site tours, following the journey of products from initial arrival at the fulfilment centre to dispatch. The tour showcased the entire process, allowing students to observe how goods are received, sorted, stored, picked, packed, and finally loaded onto Amazon delivery lorries with their correct shipping information.
A particular highlight was witnessing Amazon’s advanced robotics systems in action. Students observed how automation has revolutionised the picking and packing processes, significantly enhancing operational efficiency throughout the facility. This real world example of technological integration in business operations provided valuable context for classroom concepts.
Beyond the tour, students participated in engaging Q&A sessions with various senior staff members, including Senior Operations Managers and Operations Managers. These discussions offered valuable insights into the strategic decision-making processes, challenges, and innovations within one of the world’s leading e-commerce companies.
The Business Department extends special thanks to Andy Holloway and David Dyson for their time and expertise during these sessions. Their willingness to share their knowledge and experience provided our students with authentic perspectives on Amazon’s operations and management practices.
