Positivity Through Activity Week

Durham Sixth Form Centre recently celebrated its annual Positivity through Activity Week. This vibrant initiative, led and curated by our dedicated Student Wellbeing Group is designed to support student mental health, foster community spirit, and provide a welcome breather during a busy term. By blending mindful practices with interactive social events, the student organisers successfully created an inclusive space for everyone to recharge.

The week began with a focus on reflection and mindfulness. Students were invited to explore the ‘Have You Ever Tried Praying?’ prayer space, hosted in collaboration with St Nic’s and the Student Christian Society, which offered a quiet sanctuary for personal contemplation. Later that lunchtime, the Student Yoga Society led a restorative Yoga and Mindfulness session, helping participants stretch away their academic concerns. The positive momentum carried straight into the highly popular visit from the Anvil Alpacas. The therapeutic joy of meeting the alpacas was perfectly paired with a practical, evidence-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) session run by Piece of Mind, providing students with actionable strategies to combat exam stress.

As the week drew to a close, the focus shifted toward long-term wellness and social connection. Representatives from Bannatyne Health Club & Spa set up a stall in the Refectory, sharing expert advice on fitness, healthy habits, and self-care routines. The week culminated with ‘The Social Slice’ in the Theatre. This final event brought students together over free pizza and mindful colouring. Ultimately, this student-led initiative proved to be a resounding success, reminding everyone at DSFC of the powerful link between staying active, staying connected, and maintaining a positive mindset.
