Students test limits at University of Sunderland
Students recently visited University of Sunderland for an engaging Sports Courses taster afternoon, giving them the opportunity to experience university-level sports science facilities and practical performance testing.
The visit provided a valuable insight into the equipment and techniques used by sports scientists to assess athletic ability and monitor performance. Throughout the afternoon, students participated in a range of activities designed to test strength, speed, power and reactions in a competitive and enjoyable environment.

One of the first challenges was a vertical jump test, used to measure explosive leg power. Students produced impressive results ranging from 23cm to a standout 48cm, with many eager to compare scores and push themselves further.
The group also took part in a bench press power output assessment, where specialist technology measured both the strength and speed of each lift. The activity demonstrated how modern sports science uses real-time data to evaluate athletic performance and training effectiveness.
A major highlight of the afternoon was the intense six-second Watt Bike challenge. Students competed to generate the highest power output possible, with several returning for repeated attempts to improve their scores and climb the leaderboard. The session became increasingly competitive as participants chased the highest recorded output of an outstanding 1145 watts.
Reaction time testing also produced some surprising outcomes. Students from kickboxing and golf backgrounds achieved the fastest reaction times, showcasing the importance of concentration, coordination and quick decision-making across a variety of sports disciplines.
